“Il saggio di Lorenzo Livorsi merita speciale apprezzamento per i risultati innovativi acquisiti. Fondato sulla rilettura critica di alcune sezioni della Vita S. Martini di Venanzio Fortunato (proemio, narrazioni di miracoli, conclusioni dei libri 2, 3 e 4), intende dimostrare che l’ampia composizione, spesso accusata di mancanza di originalità, è invece un originale poema epico che rivela stretti legami, oltre che con Sulpicio Severo e Paolino di Périgueux, con la tarda produzione panegirica in prosa e versi, la tradizione epica di Virgilio e Claudiano, l’esegesi cristiana antica. Emerge con evidenza il pregio letterario di questa Vita, finora non riconosciuto; l’analisi intertestuale è approfondita e condotta con rigore. Particolarmente significativa risulta la spiritualizzazione di temi e immagini tradizionali, che mostra validamente come il poema attualizzi la nozione di santità e la figura del santo patrono Martino in relazione alla società merovingia del VI secolo. Sostenuto da ampia bibliografia, il lavoro è impreziosito da utili illustrazioni, opportunamente selezionate e riunite in appendice”.
